Athletic therapists are committed to the health care of active individuals. The scope of practice for an athletic therapist includes but is not limited to, the assessment, prevention, immediate care, and reconditioning of musculoskeletal injuries. Some extended health care plans cover athletic therapy, so check with your provider to see if you would qualify.
An athletic therapist is a health care practitioner that specializes in musculoskeletal injuries, often related to sports and activity. Athletic therapists can work in a clinical setting with patients and/or with sports teams treating immediate injuries on the side line.
Individuals with musculoskeletal pain such as, back pain, hip pain, knee pain, shin splints, shoulder complications or any other injury related to muscles, ligaments, tendons, bones and other connective tissue.
Athletic therapy is not just for active individuals with injuries, it can be used as a preventative measure as well. Sedentary individuals that are beginning to become more active or ones that have just started an active lifestyle can also benefit greatly from the services of an athletic therapist.
Athletic therapists can also be found at sporting events where their services can be proven to be very useful. Immediate care refers to on-field injury management at sporting events (i.e. hockey, soccer, football games) either during training and/or during competition. Immediate care includes injury assessment, emergency life support, management of traumatic injuries, preparation for further emergency personnel, and/or utilization of techniques facilitating a safe return to participation.
Active individuals who simply want to maintain their fitness and healthy lifestyle can also benefit from the services provided by an athletic therapist with simple maintenance work. Ensuring proper muscular firing patterns, adequate range of motion, balanced core strength, postural alignment and many other techniques used in a preventative manner.
Your first session begins with a thorough assessment to determine the best route of treatment. The assessment may include a detailed verbal history, a visual evaluation, observing postural alignment and gait, hands-on testing (observing range of motion, comparing strength of muscle groups, and palpating surface anatomy for abnormalities), special tests and finally a plan of action to be executed for treatment.
Reconditioning of musculoskeletal injuries involves many rehabilitative techniques, therapeutic modalities, soft tissue mobilization, physical reconditioning/strengthening, supportive taping and/or bracing techniques to promote an environment suitable for optimal recovery.
